Boiler Plate Document Issued to Suppliers Manufacturing Components for SSI
The Purpose of this document is to outline standard guidelines for fabricating, finishing, coating and packaging of machined components for use in SSI products. These specifications are to be used as default requirements when not otherwise specified. They are only superseded by explicit dimensional, finishing and coating requirements stated on individual part drawings.

Surface Preparation

  1. Fabrication
    1. Hole Diameter Specifications
    2. Hole Finish
      • All holes to be burr free, no hanging wickers.
  2. Mechanical Processes
    1. Buffing / Polishing
      • Unless otherwise directed on the part drawing, the orientation of buffed surfaces should be in line with the longitudinal axis of the part for hex and rectangular bar stock parts and around the circumference on round parts. Sufficient care should be taken during Buffing so as not to obliterate or alter the geometry of any associated features.
    2. Sanding
      • Unless otherwise directed on the part drawing, the orientation of sanded surfaces should be in line with the longitudinal axis of the part for hex and rectangular stock. Sharp edges/corners created by sanding should be moderated as needed to prevent injury during handling. Sanding operations should not obliterate or alter the geometry of any associated features.
    3. Tumbling
      • Care should be taken in the selection of proper tumbling media and the duration of its application as is necessary to prevent damage to interior surfaces or to alter or damage exterior features, ie. external threads. Residual tumbling media or chalky deposits present on parts after tumbling are not acceptable. The key here is clean parts immediately afterward order to prevent tumbling solution from dying onto part surfaces, especially on interior features.
    4. Sand Blasting & Glass Beading
      • An even finish consistent with the type of media used is required. Mask as needed to prevent alteration of part geometry and or overspray on associated surfaces whether interior or exterior. Except by specific agreement after blasting, parts should be sufficiently cleaned so as to remove all glass bead/sand blasting media.
    5. Heat Treating
      • Sufficient care should be taken so as to prevent damage/alteration of part geometry. Except as directed on the part drawing, oxidization of part surfaces which occurs as a result of heat treatment should be removed.
  3. Chemical Processes
    1. Coatings
      • The processes and the materials used for each are defined by the individual product manufacturers. The suppliers who apply these trademarked products are required to adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines and instructions. Additional information that is specific to SSI’s requirements is provided under each category heading or as contracted.
        1. Tiolon X20
          • Except as directed, follow the manufactures directions and recommendations for use and application.
        2. Emralon 333
          • Except as directed, follow the manufacturer’s directions and recommendations for use and application. Expressly do not exceed the manufacturer’s stated shelf life of the product. Do not use outdated material. Coat prime purge valve stems in accordance with SSI Specification # 4117.
        3. Tiodizing (for Titanium Only)
          • Except as directed, follow the manufacturer’s directions and recommendations for use and application.
        4. Everlube 6102-G
          • Except as directed, follow the manufacturer’s directions and recommendations for use and application.
    2. Passivation
    3. Etching
      • The processes and the products used for each are defined by the individual manufacturers. The suppliers who apply these trademarked products and services are required to adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines and instructions.

    4. Anodizing
      • In all Cases and regardless of the color, Anodizing must be RoHs compliant.

Material Requirements

In most cases ASTM standards apply. In some special cases such as certain plastics, No ASTM standard is yet available, however, in these cases the product manufacturer specifies the distributors. All subcontractor fabricating parts for SSI are expressly forbidden to make material/source substitutions without written permission from SSI.

Packaging Requirements

Where needed individual packaging requirements will be by arrangement with the SSI purchasing department, otherwise suppliers are advised to package items in order to insure product features are preserved without hindering access.
